Janette came to the law after more than a decade in small business. Janette's professional and business life has been in the music industry. Starting as a DJ, her first step in business was a dance music record store, importing dance music from all over the world. This grew to include supplying specialist sound and lighting equipment for DJs and nightclubs. Janette has also had a production role, including producing Australian dance music acts and award winning dance music events. Janette's experience also includes licensing, manufacturing and distribution deals covering artist and tour merchandising.
Janette obtained her Bachelor of Law degree (with Honours) and subsequently completed her Masters of Law at Monash University, focussing on commercial law and intellectual property. Janette has tutored contract law, commercial law and tax law. Highlights during her law studies include winning best senior speaker, best paper presentation and being a member of the winning team in the Vienna International Commercial Arbitration Moot.
Janette joined the University of Melbourne as an in-house lawyer where she was involved in reviewing and negotiating research and commercial contracts for the University and academics. Janette also did legal work for the University's Legislation and Trusts Committee and provided advice on a wide range of issues such as copyright, privacy and discipline issues. Prior to joining the University, Janette worked in a Collins St commercial law firm.
For Janette, the Cartel Project brings together the very important issues of business, entrepreneurship and law, as well providing the opportunity to work with a group of academics who are leading thinkers and researchers.
